Looking for a comforting bowl of pho without heading to a restaurant? This easy Vietnamese pho recipe lets you recreate the deep, savory flavors of traditional pho right in your own kitchen. With just a few ingredients, you can whip up a satisfying meal for the whole family.




🛒 Ingredients

For the broth:

  • 1 kg (2.2 lbs) brisket

  • 3 L (12.5 cups) water

  • 5 tbsp anchovy fish sauce

  • 1 tbsp beef stock powder (or Korean dashida)

For the pho bowl:

  • Dried rice noodles (pho noodles)

  • Bean sprouts

  • Green onions (sliced)

  • Red chili (sliced)

  • Fresh cilantro

  • Brisket slices (from the broth)

  • Pho broth

For the marinated onions:

  • 1 onion (thinly sliced)

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 3 tbsp lemon juice

  • 3 tbsp water



🍲 Instructions

1. Make the broth

In a large pot, combine the following and simmer over low heat for at least 2 hours, until the liquid reduces to about 1.5 liters:

  • 3 L water

  • 1 kg brisket

Remove the brisket and slice it thinly for later use.

2. Prepare marinated onions

In a bowl, mix the following and let it sit for at least 30 minutes:

  • Thinly sliced onion

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 3 tbsp lemon juice

  • 3 tbsp water

3. Season the broth and cook noodles

To the 1.5 L of broth, add:

  • 5 tbsp anchovy fish sauce

  • 1 tbsp beef stock powder (dashida)

Bring to a boil. Add rice noodles and cook for 30 seconds (or according to package instructions).

4. Assemble your pho bowl

In a large bowl, layer the following:

  • Cooked rice noodles

  • Hot broth

  • Slices of brisket

  • Bean sprouts

  • Marinated onions + 2 tbsp of marinade liquid

  • Green onions

  • Sliced red chili

  • Fresh cilantro
